It’s a matter of simple equality: Rural America deserves fair access to the same high-quality wireless telephone service that urban Americans take for granted. We are becoming a wireless nation – people everywhere depend on their cell phones to meet safety and business needs. Rural America must not be left behind.

Connecting Rural America is a grassroots coalition of advocacy groups, community leaders and elected officials working to see that rural citizens have access to the same high-quality service and choices in wireless telecommunications offerings that are available in urban areas.

In the spring of 2008, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) capped the Universal Service Fund (USF), freezing federal support for rural wireless development.

The FCC is now considering proposals for “long-term reform” that are even worse than the cap. These proposals are bad for rural consumers and could result in a 50 percent cut in existing USF funding that is dedicated to building new cell towers. A 50 percent cut in funding will mean significantly fewer new and needed cell towers being constructed in rural America.
